icon Initiative: attack values.

Hello - a quick(?) question about Initiative! and the values employed when attacking.

I launch a Wildcat and a Hellcat against Japanese shipping. Neither are blocked so attack their selected targets. Now, the Wildcat only has one attack value - air-to-air - so I use that; but the Hellcat has a value of two against sea craft, so do I use that or it's air-to-air value, and the anti-shipping value only if it has to defend against a ship?

Hello.

Units may attack enemy forces of their own type (groundforces vs groundforces, ships vs. ships, aircrafts vs. aircrafts) and of other types, if they have an initiative! ability. For example, initiative! against sea targets, allows an aircraft to fire on ships. But all units may only use their attack values of the type of the attacked target. Attacking (or defending against) a ship, you have to use the air to sea value.

In your example this means: The Wildcat is allowed to attack aircrafts (because it is an aircraft) and ships, because of its initiative! against sea. Its air to sea value is 0, so it will dial 0 points of damage to the attacked ship, until you choose to buy 2 points of air to sea value for 2 ressourcepoints, as mentioned on the card.
The Hellcat is allowed to attack aircrafts (because it is an aircraft) and ships, because of its initiative! against sea. Its air to sea value is 1, so it will dial 1 points of damage to the attacked ship.
So, if you have 2 ressourcepoints left, you may dial up to 3 points of damage to the emperors ship and will hopefully sink it.

Firstly - apologies for not reading the card properly in the first place!

To recap: some aircraft with the Initiative! ability may only damage land and sea targets by expending additional TAs?

Yup, that's right.

Look at this, for example:

Me110 C-2 may attack naval or ground targets, but need to have its attack value against naval targets boosted in order to actually do damage.
